Christmas is no different, food wise, for a vegetarian than for any one else.
In fact most converts to vegetarianism say that the one meat they have never missed is turkey!!! After all,
turkey is a fairly bland and dry meat and is only enhanced by the different flavours that accompany it.
So, vegetarians can have all the different flavours along with some very tasty
and nutritious alternatives to turkey.
Nowadays, supermarkets stock a good range of vegetarian Christmas fare, Christmas puddings, mince pies,
mincemeat, stuffing mixes, gravies and sauces etc all readily prepared. So it's no longer a problem for even
the most faint hearted to have a traditional vegetarian Christmas. However, checking labels is essential.
Having said that, there is nothing quite as good as home made, so below are a few menu ideas for this special time. Most of these dishes can be made well ahead of time and frozen, no last minute tussle with the turkey!!! The only effort needed is to remove them from the freezer on Christmas Eve.
Menu 1
Brown Lentil Loaf
Sprouts with onions
Broccoli au Gratin
Roast Potatoes and Parsnips
Onion gravy
Sage and Onion Stuffing Balls
Followed by Christmas pudding (bought ones are excellent these days) these dishes give a very traditional Christmas taste. Apart from the sprouts and roast vegetables everything else can be cooked and frozen. ahead of time.. Cranberry sauce, bottled or fresh also goes well
Menu 2
Cream of Cauliflower Soup
Melba Toast
Chilli Bean Cassoulet
Cauliflower Cheese
Two Beans in Sesame
Pan fried Potatoes in Poppy Seeds
Leek and Onion Sauce
The vegetables can be changed to the more traditional ones, as in menu 1 or choose any from the recipes page. Could be followed by traditional Christmas pudding or any favourite dessert.
