Whole grains are cereal grains such as barley, buckwheat, corn, millet oats, rye spelt and wheat. They contain all the three edible parts, which make up the grain. The bran which is the outer shell, the endosperm which is the inner core and the central core which is the wheat germ itself. It is these parts that together contain the beneficial nutrients. When grains are refined some of these nutrients are lost.
Whole grains are said to have a beneficial effect in maintaining a healthy heart, digestive system, and blood sugar levels. They also reduce the risk of diabetes, bowel and stomach cancers.
